Reading for Pleasure

As a school we are committed to promoting an ethos of reading for pleasure in our pupils.

As part of this belief we feel it is important that you as parents, carers and guardians are involved in this process. We understand that you may feel unsure about some of the literature your children may wish to read. In order to address this we would like to encourage you to look at the attached website which will enable you to easily identify reading material by age order, as it has reading lists from primary through to secondary age.

KS3 reading for pleasure this summer.

Before reading, look for a review or summary of the book to see if it sounds interesting and challenging enough. Here are some websites to get you started when doing this research:

  • Lovereading4schools (which also has recommended reading lists)
  • Bookstrust (which also has a Book finder and reading lists)
  • Goodreads
  • Amazon (look at the description and reviews of the book)
  • Project Gutenberg – http://www.gutenberg.org/ – A huge resource of free online ebooks.

Top Tip: If a book isn’t interesting or gripping at first, read to at least 30% of a book before giving up!

We have made notes where books contain emotional or mature context.
